The overall objective can be divided into several sub questions. The feasibility study will try to answer these within a budget frame of 705.000 DKK. of which 412.000 DKK have been funded by Regional European Development Funding from Syddansk Vækstforum (South Danish Growth Forum). The rest will be paid by the involved partners contributing with working hours and other ressources.

The analyses will focus on:

  1. Assessing the market potential for the zero emission ferry based on one or two concept designs.
  2. The concept design of the zero emission ferry and the necessary land installations?
  3. A business model for the building and possibilities for financing the concept ferries at local shipyards.
  4. The environmental and socioeconomic impact of the operation of such ferries based on route cases.
  5. Funding, finance and screening of potential routes for demonstration project.

Several barriers are to be overcome in order to answer these questions. Amongst the more complicated are:

  • Optimization of hull design in channels and waterways where ship is interacting with seabed and banks.
  • Ship class regulations on carbon composite materials and electrically powered engine rooms including fire safety issues and minimum safe manning.
  • Durability of batteries and charging strategy for these.
  • Forecasting of future battery prices and performance.
  • Needed crew size and the competences of crew with the innovative technology in mind.
  • Environmental impact from carbon composite and battery materials and recycling of these.
  • The paradox in tax exemption on fossil fuel but not on electricity charged for propulsion.
  • Accessing the tender market for smaller ferries often public controlled.
  • Providing financial solutions for both public and private investments in ferry and landinstallations.

The analysis has been divided into six way points (WP) or deliveries, the five mentioned above plus one on dissemination of results. WP analyses are delegated to involved partners, see table below. For each WP detailed problem statements have been defined by stakeholders and subsequently appropriate methodology will be applied for the analysis. This is all described in an internal working catalogue. One of the advantages using WP deliveries is that sub reports can be published prior to the final study.
